Fossil Rock Henge

Dscf6962

It has been some time since I last dropped in on you guys but fear not Creativity has been rearing it's gargantuan dragon like head my way!... I have been quite busy finishing off more scoodies and beading projects. I have made myself two pairs of earrings. and as always reading and writing galore! more writing I must be honest except for the editing!?! But Wow.... so much done!

I have been exploring more of Victoria as well! We went and checked out the Rock and Gem show and the Fossil Fair. So the Rock show was pretty awesome though more of a market and slightly pricey.... but hey, thats what you get at those things!?!?! I got a few things there. Like I said the earrings! I also made my mom a key chain which I completely forgot to put in the package I just sent her because I am a Stoner lol! So mom if your reading this sorry! I will bring it in June!

The fossil fair though was wicked! So it all started when i saw the add for it online. I knew it would be on the Saturday and Sunday.  As i knew it was going to be nicer on the Saturday I was hoping that my boyfriend and I would go.... Yeah right lol!!! He slept in! so I was out in the yard doing some gardening, messing around with the rocks when I picked up what I thought was a slightly smaller than fist sized rock. I went to toss it on the other pile of stones there when I suddenly noticed that it was different looking.  Upon closer inspection I saw a shell shape and two toned nature to it. I was beginning to get excited!  I immediately ran inside and my dad and Shai agreed with me that it was a fossil. Yes! I had something to bring to the fair!
The next day when we went up to Swan lake to check it out the gentleman behind the table (Tom Cockburn) knew exactly what it was! How stoked was I!!! He told me that it was a 15 to 25 million year old Moon snail and that it probably came from Sooke judging by the sand stone it was made up of. Basically the fossil I had was missing the shell on the outside.  I had the compressed sand that had packed into the shell over approximately 15 million years.  If you look at the stone closely you can see in the tighter parts of the coil that there is indeed some shell left. As well you can see tiny shell compacted into the sand where the shell would have opened to the ocean floor. we then walked around the room checking out more cool fossils when we came back to the Mr. Cockburns table and picked up a case with a flat shell in it.  This shell had a hole bored straight through the middle of it and a little question below asking do you know who did this? What do you know it was the Moon snail! how cool is that! the bastards latch on to the clams and bore a hole right into them and suck them dry! Brutal! but the coolest part of all is that moon snails are still around today!

I also wanted to let you guys know about this amazing book that I found at the library.  So a few years ago I heard these wisps and teases about a Canadian Stonehenge. I could only ever find the one same article on the net and was hard pressed to find anyone who had heard of it too. Then while looking on the bottom shelve in the library ( the bottom shelve always hold treasures!) I found Canada's Stonehenge by Gordon R. Freeman an amazing anthology of his 28years of research into this amazing site in southern Alberta. He is an brilliant mind and an amazing person. using photography and mathematics he puts forth a brilliant case in which you might find yourself being swayed to his perspective! It comes to you from me as a HIGHLY suggested read and like he says if the mathematics make you nervous (I wont lie I hate math) then you will enjoy the other stories and parts of the amazing observations he has brought together in this book. I have discovered now that he has a website up as well so please let every know about this... share the website and the book spread the word!

PLEASE HOWEVER DO NOT GO TO THIS SITE..... THE NATIVE PEOPLES OF THE AREA, GORDON FREEMAN AND OTHER ARCHAEOLOGISTS HAVE ALREADY BEEN THERE AND DONE THE WORK FOR US.... JUST RESEARCH AND YOU WILL FIND THEY ARE MORE THAN WILLING TO SHARE THIS INFORMATION WITH US! TODAY IS AN AGE OF TECHNOLOGY THAT ALLOWS US TO EXAMINE THE PAST WITHOUT TOUCHING AND DEPLETING IT FURTHER LET US TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT!
